Preparing for your Newborn Session
Oh how I love newborn photography! Gorgeous little people that light up our world. The first professional photos of your new baby are so special and I love to capture all that newborn deliciousness. But preparing for your session can feel quite daunting. Here are a few tips to help you prepare...
BEFORE YOUR SESSION:
Give your baby a bath the morning of your session. Dress them in something easy to take off like a zip up or snap front onesie, try to avoid any clothing items we need to take off over the head. This will help me avoid waking your baby when getting prepared for the session. Try to feed your baby either right before leaving your home or plan on feeding your little one as soon as you get to the studio. Keeping your baby as close to their normal feeding schedule as possible typically works out the best. We will have plenty of time for breaks and cuddles if your baby becomes fussy and needs another chance to eat or be changed.
WHAT TO BRING:
- Nappy bag with nappies, wipes, change of clothes and other usual nappy bag items
- Pacifier, even if you aren’t using one yet
- Extra formula, for formula-fed babies. If you’re breastfeeding, be prepared to nurse more often than usual
- A blanket for your baby, sometimes they love to snuggle under it between posing or during feedings
- Sentimental item if you choose to bring one with you
- Snacks (I provide some snacks and drinks but you may want to bring your own)
THE SESSION:
Newborn sessions can take up to 2 and 3 hours. This gives me plenty of time for posed newborn portraits, portraits in props, and if you want a couple of sibling, parent portraits. Your baby may cry or fuss between posing, or need a feeding break, and that’s ok! I work at the babies pace, they are in control, your baby’s safety and comfort as my top priority. I provide everything we will need for your newborn session, including wraps, backdrops, headbands, bonnets, hats and the most gorgeous little snugglies to make the most adorable photos.
WHAT TO WEAR:
The studio is kept very warm for your baby, so I suggest you wear layers so you can remove layers if you get too warm. Parent and sibling photos are just of your top half, not full body portraits so a light neutral coloured top is all you need. Singlets, t-shirts, shirts in Soft pinks and blues, grey, white, and cream colours always look great in portraits! Try to stay away from any clothing with large logos and busy patterns. For sibling, parents portraits, you want to be cohesive, so similar colour hues. I can guide you more on this if you want.
